Blue Star Youth Football and Cheerleading
Association, Inc. is a recreational football and
cheerleading association that was created in
1970 by a man named a man named A.Q. Hance.
He formed an organization called "The Pearson's
Corner Youth Football Association." Their home
field was located at Pearson's Corner Elementary
School in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Mr. Hance
served as the President of the Association that
year with Ernest Seay as the Vice-President,
Jim Stillman as the Treasurer and Dennis Borkey
as the Secretary. A Mr. Mike Duffy agreed to
furnish the team uniforms if they would call the
team the "Wreckers." The uniforms that year
were orange, black and white. Not being a part
of Richmond's Metropolitan Youth Football
League (MYFL), the Wreckers could only
get games with MYFL teams that had
open dates.
In joining the MYFL the following year, Pearson's
Corner was required to field Senior (grades 9-12) ,
Junior (grades 7 and 8), and Midget (grades 5 and 6).
In order to field a Senior team that year, boys were recruited from the Hanover School for Boys.
The Association, realizing the need for lights during evening practices, moved to Washington Henry Elementary School (formerly one of the county's high schools) in 1971 and decided to change the name of the association. Several names were suggested, but the "Founding Fathers," anxious to have a name that would please people living on both sides of Route 301 (honored as the "Blue Star Memorial Highway"), settled on the "Blue Star Star Youth Football Association."
Blue Star is located in Mechanicsville, Virginia. We have over 400 athletes participating in organized football and cheerleading. We have approximately 100 adults actively involved as directors, coaches, committee members and volunteers working hard to support these athletes. Blue Star provides a safe, drug free environment for children to learn the fundamentals of football and cheerleading. Blue Star is also, a Non-Profit organization.
We are a proud member of Richmond's Metropolitan Youth Football League. The MYFL is comprised of 20 associations that represent over 5,000 athletes.
We are free to enjoy and to pursue our freedom today due to the sacrifices that have been made and continue to be made by the men and women who have served and who serve today in the United States Armed Forces. The Members of Mechanicsville VFW Post 9808 are our best friends. There are many people serving in the United States Armed Forces today from Mechanicsville and from other parts of Hanover County. Some of these people are members of the Blue Star family. Many more are relatives and friends of Blue Star Association members. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to each one of these soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen as well as their families. Blue Star salutes you and sincerely thanks you for the sacrifices that you are making to insure that our children will grow up in a country where they will be able to enjoy and pursue Freedom! May God Bless You All!
As we are working on this site constantly, please check back regularly as there will be many changes.
